Tasting notes

Wilridge's 2008 Red Mountain Melange celebrates Artz vineyard and its owners, Fred and Jorja Artz.  In 2008, Fred was named Grower of the Year by the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers.  We could not agree more!  Wilridge winemaker Paul Beveridge has been working with Fred on Red Mountain for over twenty years and together they have shaped Wilridge's most award-winning and high scoring wines.

Wilridge reserves the term "Melange" for blends of wines from exceptional vintages.  The last Red Mountain Melange was harvested in 2003 and featured a "Bordeaux-style" blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc from three Red Mountain vineyards.  For the 2008 version, Paul again took his inspiration from Bordeaux and selected a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, all from Artz Vineyard on Red Mountain.  The result is a balanced wine that should age gracefully for years.

The wine is deep, dark red in color with a slightly "peppery" nose from the Cabernet Franc in the blend.  The aroma also includes toast and vanilla notes from the French oak barrels used to cellar the wine for 21 months.  The power of the Cabernet Sauvignon is enhanced, not softened, by the Merlot, while the Cabernet Franc provides spice and character to the blend.  Drink Wilridge Red Mountain Melange now with your favorite cuts of red meat or wild game.  Age it for a few years and it will soften to the point where it will be a perfect match for a wider range of cuisine, including pork and chicken dishes.
