Wine News Aug-Sept 2001 issueWashington vs. Oregon - Distinguishing the Northwest's two unique wine regions By Robert Mayfield ...At Wilridge Winery in Seattle, Paul Beveridge makes big Columbia Valley Cabs and Merlots, but also turns out a small amount of Oregon Pinot Noir every year. "In Washington you simply wait around for the grapes to get ripe," he says, "but in Oregon, it's always nail-biting time. As you get closer to ripening, the rains come, then you ask yourself, 'Do I pick, do I wait?'" The challenge is in guessing right. |

![]() Sept 2000 by Bruce Schoenfeld Single - vineyard success Wilridge, specializes in single-vineyard Washington reds. Having started with Bordeaux varieties, Beveridge has lately added a Pinot Noir from a fruit source in Oregon, and this year a Nebbiolo, Washington's third. These wines augment a portfolio that already includes one of the state's most balanced and refined Cabernet Sauvignons, a varietal Cabernet Franc and a Merlot-dominated Meritage called Melange that has earned high scores and high praise for its lush fruit and drinkability. |

Winning Wine In just a few years Seattle-based Wilridge Winery has won some of the nation's most prestigious awards for its merlots and other reds. In March, for instance, the New York-published Wine Enthusiast magazine called Wilridge's 1997 merlot this year's top Washington-made red wine. "This is a deep, aromatic wine, with hints of rose petals, herbs and allspice," the review said. "Highlights are the fine tannins, blackberry fruit and shapely body and finish. Lush enough, but plenty of backbone, too." |
This issue's label art pick pays tribute to the benefits of having artistic friends. Wilridge Winery's Corral Creek Vineyard Oregon Pinot Noir 1997 features the label art of winery friend Isa F. D'Orleans. Born in France and now residing in Seattle, D'Orleans dreamy art evokes Chagall and Modigliani.
